A visit to Lesotho really is a magical experience.
Dates: 7 August 2009 to 10 August 2009
Some photos of our Aug 2009 trip
Come and discover Lesotho - The Kingdom in the Sky. High in the mountains of Southern Africa, unique in that it is an independent nation completely surrounded by South Africa, is the Kingdom of Lesotho —an often-surprising combination of rapidly-developing modernity and ancient culture. Most tourists travel many kilometers from their countries just to come and experience the last opportunity of the old Africa.
This trip offers a magnificent opportunity to explore nature still little changed by man, still unspoilt by crowds of tourists, and to appreciate the untamed but beautiful landscapes of the soaring Maluti and Drakensberg mountains. It is also known as “the Mountain Kingdom” because of its many mountains, with peaks reaching over 3 000m. Even its lowest areas are all above 1 000m above sea level.
Driving in Lesotho is quite an experience, and probably the best way to see the country.
We meet the night of the 6th at Rebellie Guest Farm where we will stay the night, nestled in the serene mountainous landscape of the majestic Maluti Mountains. Rebellie offers the perfect sanctuary away from everyday city life, noise and stress. From here we leave for Ramabanta via Clarens and Calidonspoort border post. We will stay two nights at Ramabanta, hidden deep in the mountains of the King of Lesotho. With spectacular views across the valley, Ramabanta Trading Post Lodge is the Ideal Location for the adventurer seeking the ultimate challenge in off-road trails or the traveler who wants the peace and tranquility of the valleys and mountains of Lesotho.
On the morning of the 8th we will visit the spectacular Maletsunyane waterfall where we will have lunch, watching the water thundering into its pool and creating a smoky mist, breathtaking in its beauty. Maletsunyane Falls are more than three times higher than the 159 ft American Niagara Falls. They are the second highest in southern Africa after Tugela Falls in South Africa which are four times higher. The next morning (9th) we will leave for Malealea on route we will visit the Botsoela waterfall. The hand-built road hugs the side of the mountains through remote villages and magnificent scenery.
We stay the night at Malealea Lodge where Basotho Children's choirs and a local Basotho Band, using their local home-made instruments, entertain the guests in the evenings around a campfire. Malealea is situated in a remote part of Western Lesotho, breathtaking in its beauty and a chance to experience traditional Basotho life.
Monday the 10th after breakfast we will leave for Clarens where we all will have lunch together. (For own account). The tour will end here. The village of Clarens is an artist’s haven and home to many well known artists with many art galleries scattered around the village square. The town is known for the many Art and Craft shops which offer the visitor a wide range of curios and original artwork. Another feature which adds to the picturesque atmosphere of the village is the many sandstone buildings.
This is an all-inclusive self-drive tour.
Excluded are vehicle, fuel, lunches and beverages. It is best to travel with all the lunchtime food and drinks you will need for the whole journey.
Radios will be provided for each vehicle.
We stay over at Lodges every night and all breakfasts and dinners are included.
