Coast to Coast tour

Travel the east and south coast of South Africa

Experience the wonder of dramatic river cut gorges, beautiful beaches, rocky headlands and deep tangled forests with us …

Day 1:      Tour starts in Durban. From Durban we travel to Wild Coast Sun resort where we will overnight. The resort is situated on an unspoilt beach within 750 hectares of natural bush between the Umtamvuna and Mzamba rivers, providing beautiful views over the Indian Ocean.

Day 2:      After breakfast we leave for Mthatha (Umtata) were we will visit the Nelson Mandela museum and his place of birth in Qunu. The rural people live a life richly colored by tribal tradition and beliefs. Brightly colored examples of the beadwork, together with traditional pottery and basketwork can be bought from roadside vendors and at some trading posts. The whole region, once known as the Transkei homeland, is the home of a major section of the Xhosa-speaking southern Nguni tribes and of course the birth place of the great Nelson Mandela.

Day 3:      We head for Addo National Park where we will spend one night.  We will do a Sundowner game drive. Some of the animals that can bee seen are: elephant, buffalo, bush pig, bushbuck, kudu, gray Duiker, Cape Grysbok, Ant-bear and Rhinoceros, all in a malaria free game and bird watching area.

Day 4/5:    Today we will travel to Tsitsikamma National Park, a region of startling beauty along South Africa's southern coastline a must visit for outdoor and wildlife enthusiasts, where we will stay for two nights.  In the afternoon we could take a walk in the forest and cross the suspension bridge at the Storms River Mouth. Next day we will visit Bird sanctuary, Monkey Land and Elephant Park where you can get a change to interact with the elephants.

Day 6:      Today we will have a leisure trip to Knysna and stop along the way at various sight seeing places. Knysna Heads must be the most striking geological features along the entire southern African coastline. They flank a deep but potentially treacherous channel through which the sea pours in to flood the wide and breathtakingly pretty lagoon at the mouth of the Knysna River. Knysna has many attractions in the surrounding area as well, one of the most spectacular being the Knysna Forest, which is still evident in many places within the town as well. It is the largest indigenous forest in South Africa comprising of tall and ancient trees of local and exotic species, including stinkwood.

Day 7/8:   The morning will be at your leisure in Knysna.  Mid afternoon we will travel the short distance to Oudtshoorn where we will stay for two nights. Oudtshoorn is the ostrich capital of the world. Here ostriches are found in great numbers and the region produces the best feathers, leather products and ostrich meat world wide. But the world’s biggest bird is just one of the many attractions in this area of interesting contrasts.

Day 9:      Today we will visit an Ostrich farm and the Cango Caves and if time permits the Leopard and crocodile farm. The Cango Caves are one of the great natural wonders of the world. Several systems of spectacular limestone caverns have been discovered. All are filled with a wonderland of stalactites, stalagmites and helictites (limestone formations that grow in unusual directions). Some of the biggest stalagmite formations in the world set in Precambrian (a time about 4500 million years ago) limestone, can be seen here.

Day 10     Head for Cape Town via route 62, Swellendam and Sir Lowry's Pass with awesome views over False Bay, whilst over the other side of the mountain one enters a beautiful valley that is home to forests, orchards, fruit, flowers and vineyards - the Elgin Valley. In spring this part of the world is a display of blossoming fruit trees and heavy with grapes on the vine.
